Well, this is going to be a boring post…

People should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies. If that includes altering their bodies, then so be it.

HOWEVER, I don’t approve of the messages society sends to people, especially women, about beauty and what it means if you don’t fit their ideal of beauty. There’s this impossible ideal they expect you to live up to. You have to be skinny as a twig, have the exact right nose, plumped up lips, no wrinkles or fine lines, perfectly styled hair, huge breasts (that’s just for the women…men feel some pressure, I’m sure, but I’m not a man, so I don’t know, except ,muscles, maybe? I don’t know..)…and if you deviate even a little bit you’re an ugly fat cow. And the thing is…most of these pictures you see of the “perfect women”, in advertisements and such? They aren’t real. They’ve been photoshopped beyond all recognition. I recently saw a blog post somewhere where it went over how even already drop-dead gorgeous Playboy centerfold are photoshopped. Beautiful actresses and actors get photoshopped.

It’s having a detrimental effect on our society. People are starving themselves because of this. A young lady I know, who weighed about 115 at the time, which is only 5-10 pounds more than little always-gets-accused-of-being-anorexic-but-eats-a-lot me, told me that sometimes she doesn’t eat because it makes her feel fat. And she’s taller than me, and a gorgeous young woman, and she can’t see it. And I know others who abstain from eating, or who eat and then puke, because they don’t feel skinny enough.

I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to take this impossible ideal of beauty and then make the jump to some people are getting plastic surgery to fix this. Which, as I said, is their right, since they should be allowed to do what they want with their own bodies, but…I wish it would be for internal reasons instead of society dictated reasons. Change your body if you feel like it, but not if you’re only doing so to conform to society’s expectations, would be my advice, but of course, no one has to listen to that if they don’t want to. Just..be happy. Try to love who you are before going in for plastic surgery, because no matter how hard you tr y, changing your outsides doesn’t change the person on the inside….
