I don’t believe in a god type figure. Actually, I think of myself as an atheist. I just never felt in my heart like I could believe in something so fantastical just because I was told it was true, and I haven’t seen any sort of proof that convinces me that there is something up there watching us…
(side note: I don’t think that atheism is a religion. Some people have tried to claim that agnosticism is the only thing not a religion because atheism makes a stance on whether or not good exists so it involves having faith in god not existing. I disagree. I see it as a lack of faith, an absence of faith, not a faith in nonexistence. In most topics, if you make an assertion, if you don’t back it up with proof, it’s only natural to not believe a thing the person is saying until they provide said proof. I’m not saying that I know 100% for sure that “God” or whatever doesn’t exist, I’m saying that unless I see some sort of proof that convinces me, I’m not going to believe in him/her/it..otherwise, why not believe in Santa? Is a guy in a magical sleigh who has elves and lives at the north pole who magically knows who’s bad or good and gives everyone presents really less believable than a guy in the sky who somehow magically created everything, knows everything, and apparently REALLY cares about what you did in the bedroom, for instance? At least I’ve seen people dressed up as Santa, and had “proof” in the presents….)

I just don’t believe. I wanted to, believe me. I spent over half of my (admittedly short, but still…) trying to believe in something. I just don’t. And it would be dishonest of me to pretend otherwise.

Also, if anyone wants to know my religious path up through this point? Catholic (Was baptized as a baby, even!) » Pagan » Agnostic (and looking and reading about other religions, seeing if I managed to believe any of them) and then… » Atheism!

And I’d like to add that as long as people don’t try to convert me, I don’t have a problem with religious folk. I try to respect their beliefs, as long as they respect my lack thereof. I don’t think I know all the answers, so why act like I do? Some of my best friends are religious. We’ve just agreed to disagree.

I actually haven’t “suffered” much for being an atheist, I’m happy to say. I’ve heard people report problems with being teased or bullied or laughed at for being an atheist, but I haven’t experienced that much. I mean, some kids in high school made comments when I said I didn’t believe in hell (they were telling me I would burn in hell for liking women as well as men), and there have been a few rolled eyes or dirty looks when I’ve brought it up in class (relevent to the discussion of course) and endured a few conversion attempts, but for the most part, I don’t experience that much trouble in day-to-day life, the assumption that I’m either Christian or believe in a higher power, which is occasionally a minor annoyance but doesn’t tend to come up as often as you might think…). I’m apparently one of the lucky ones. My thoughts to those who aren’t so lucky, and keep it secret, in fear or ridicule or losing their job or any other such worries.

If people feel the need to argue, feel free to comment, but just know that my life is a bit insane, so I might not get back to you for a while. And I find I tire of internet arguments rather easily these days, so if I stop responding, it’s not because you won(I’d let you know if that happened), it’s ’cause I’m lazy.

And to end it on a lighter note, have some videos:
